VANIA TOLEDO

September 26 - November 10 2026

"ICONS of a civilization taking shape, these images bear undeniable witness to a multiethnic constellation, diverse in its individual expressions. Musicians, actors and actresses, and other figures from a world that was expanding and diversifying in the 1980s and 1990s. Even before a star system had taken hold in Brazil, the seeds of a culture eager to find its place were growing through mass culture, shaped by television, newspapers and magazines.

Vânia was both a witness to and a participant in this transformation. Her striking presence and unforgettable laughter echoed through parties and backstage corridors, particularly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and New York. Born in Paracatu, Minas Gerais, she brought her generosity and joy with her, translating singular moments in Brazil’s artistic world into the language of photography.

With this exhibition, we pay tribute to her and hope that many will find inspiration in her journey."

"To be alongside Vânia for more than two decades was to witness the freedom of a singular artist. Diário de Bolsa grew directly out of the time she spent immersed in Andy Warhol’s world at Studio 54. She brought that visual language to Brazil, transforming candid moments of nightlife into art with the camera she carried in her handbag, long before mobile phones and digital cameras.

Always faithful to analog photography and unwavering in her convictions, she never shaped her words or her art to please the market. This exhibition stands as a testament to a photographer who revolutionized the way Brazilian nightlife was captured, with the same intensity, honesty and attitude with which she lived."
