Sonho, memória, tempos interpostos, difusos. A investigação poética e filosófica da artista visual Helô Mello, que tem a fotografia como principal linguagem em seu espectro de experimentações, visa levar ao limite a representação de um determinado instante para averiguar o substrato visual que resta em nossa memória após a vertigem do tempo solapar certezas e impulsionar fabulações.
O gesto artístico aqui tem a função de erigir uma espécie de monumento visual diáfano e bidimensional a uma quase memória. Quase, pois sabe-se que toda
memória é, em boa medida, invenção. Uma fotografia, afinal, carrega em si o histórico – e as ruínas – de múltiplas camadas significativas que vão sendo transmutadas em nossa percepção, à medida que nos afastamos do tempo-espaço cristalizado nas imagens dos rituais que pontuam nossas vidas.
Nesta sua segunda mostra individual, Helô apresenta obras de quatro séries que juntas mostram a coerência e a determinação da sua pesquisa. No entanto, todas foram abrigadas em torno do título-conceito Sognarium, nome de seu fotolivro lançado em 2022 e da principal série exposta agora, pela primeira vez, aqui na Kobbi Gallery.
No mezanino encontram-se obras das séries Arqueologia da Não Memória (2017) e Horizonte Suspenso (2019), além da obra Sem Palavras (2022). Na primeira série Helô investiga aos modos de uma arqueóloga imagens órfãs coletadas em sebos para atribuir-lhes uma configuração espectral que remete a sudários. Na segunda, por meio do uso de câmeras de funcionamento errático, tempos surgem
entrecruzados, gerando um enigmático espaço entre ocorrência e representação.
Na sala principal Sognarium justapõe as aventuras que perfazem os ciclos vitais de uma jabuticabeira, uma bananeira e um conjunto de velhos slides encontrados num
porão. Helô extrai dessa equação imagens de um sonho lisérgico libertador. Por fim, Algas Imigrantes (2020) nos convida a um jogo coreográfico no qual fotografias e aquarelas dançam até nos fazerem esquecer que estamos diante de imagens estáticas. Eis que nos percebemos sonhando acordados.

Dream, memory, diffuse and interposed times. The poetic and philosophical investigation of visual artist Helô Mello, who uses photography as the main language in her spectrum of experiments, aims to bring the representation of a given moment to the limit, in order to ascertain the visual substrate that remains in our memory after
the vertigo of time has concealed certainties and propelled fabulations.
Here, the artistic gesture aims to build a diaphanous and two-dimensional visual monument that amounts to a quasi-memory. Approximately, since it is well known that all memory is, to a large extent, an invention. A photograph, after all, carries the history – and the ruins – of multiple significant layers, which are transmuted in our perception, as we move away from the time and space crystallised in the images of many rituals that punctuate our lives.
In her second solo exhibition, Helô presents works from four series that together show the coherence and determination of her research. However, they were all housed around one concept-title: Sognarium, the name of her photobook released in 2022 and the main series, now on display for the first time, here at Kobbi Gallery.
On the mezzanine, we can find works from the series Arqueologia da Não Memória / Archaeology of the Non-Memory (2017) and Horizonte Suspenso/ Suspended
Horizon (2019), in addition to the work Sem Palavras/ No Words (2022). In the first series, Helô investigates, by means of an archaeologist, orphaned images collected in second-hand bookstores, giving them a spectral configuration that resembles shrouds. In her second series, through the use of erratically functioning cameras, time appears intertwined, causing an enigmatic space between occurrence and representation.
In the main room, Sognarium juxtaposes the adventures that make up the life cycles of a jabuticaba tree, a banana tree and a set of old slides found in a basement. From this equation, Helô extracts images of a liberating lysergic dream. Finally, Algas Imigrantes/ Immigrating Algae (2020) invites us to a choreographic game in which photographs and watercolours dance until we forget that we are faced by static images. Here, we find ourselves daydreaming.
